Throwback Thursday



Going back to 5/24/13 when I brought Gertrude Jekyll, a David Austin rose (my first DA) home. A birthday present to myself. I couldn't stop taking photos of her! 

She was coming back strong last season (2014), until a very late cold snap, and she never recovered. Debating on replacing her with another this year. I'm not sure it will be in the budget (if there even is a gardening budget this year, that remains to be seen), but I do miss Gertrude so! I think she and Julia Child would get along famously, although I'm afraid Queen Elizabeth is getting a tad put off by being surrounded by other famous women ;-)

I gave up on roses, because they are not "forever" plants here in FL. David Austin roses are out altogether because they need more cold than we have. I tried very hard to grow roses once, in honor of my father, but it just never worked out. If I were you, and I loved this rose, I would try growing one in a container that I could protect from the cold. Or next year, wrap a string of battery operated Christmas lights around it and cover it with a blanket.

I grow all of my roses in containers! And have done so since 2007. It was a late, unexpected cold snap for which I wasn't home, and Gertrude already had a lot of new growth starting, so there was nothing I could do. To me, nothing is forever in a garden, especially when you've experienced the amount of extremes we've had here at The Portable Homestead since 2011! Container gardening adds to that instability vs gardening in-ground, but I've no choice here. Every year lessons are learned and every year is a chance to begin anew! I'm sorry you're unable to grow roses where you are in Florida! Have you tried contacting the American Rose Society to see if they have any suggestions for your hardiness zone?

After my brother died a friend gave me money to buy a rose to remember him. so I searched and chose Lady Diana, I planted the rose bush with some of my brother's ashes. I took care of it, but it never came up the next summer. I was devastated. I have do not have any roses in my garden.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Susan! Roses can be finicky. I started with Knockouts and have branched out to other floribunda, hybrid teas and grandiflora's since. The pink knockout I planted in my daughter's memory is still thriving, thankfully. Since the extreme temps of 2010 followed by the exact opposite in 2011 plus 2 hurricanes 2 years in a row, I've lost more than half of my 50+ containers, which includes roses so far.

The Time Is Upon Us Once Again!

Welcome Friends! It's time once again for A Fanciful Twist Halloween Party ! Warmest thanks to the lovely Vanessa for hosting again this year. My apologies for not having this up sooner, I've been dreadfully under the weather and my helpers have been more of a hindrance! My lovely kitchen witch Helvetica has given up time off and has been cooking & baking away since last night but the skeletons have been eating everything in sight (damn their bottomless stomachs!) though they won't fess up and the invisible man has been raving on and on every time the door bell rings! 11:14pm (3/16/09) Watching a documentary Tennessee is so beautiful Head & nose all stuffy Out of ZyrtekD - sigh Want to read but distracted by my clogged head Hubby's snoring a little, restless a lot I worry about him He's so tired, works so much Doesn't get to do what he enjoys often enough (If at all) He willingly took my burdens & made them his own I'm still not used to being taken care of Makes me uncomfortable, guilty I took care of things for so many years Are 2 persons "stuff" too much for 1 person? Even a good, strong man? I know what it is to do more than my "fair share" Though the situation was completely different Is the end result the same?
