Purging: It Does A Mind and Soul Good

Taken from a 2012 post, which you can find here.
You all know I am a big fan of purging - the de-cluttering and simplifying of ones surroundings - because it truly does a mind and soul a world of good. I can't recommend it enough!

Well, I've been holding on to some specific items for years. Why? For many reasons, but mainly because I truly liked these things and I had hoped over time they would lose the negativity of situations and people from my past they were associated with.

They didn't.

It's been in the back of my mind since the end of November to finally get rid of these things. I was ready but, with a sick and passing kitty, and all the emotions I was going through with him, I wasn't ready. If that makes sense.

This Saturday afternoon, I finally purged them.

Hubbs and I had a spat just before I went back down to the basement to put a load of laundry in the dryer and start another in the wash. I was ticked off, to say the least. Plus I had been reading Ghost On Black Mountain by Ann Hite, and without spoilers, perhaps the courage of one of the characters stuck with me even when the book was put down.

I wanted to do something. That's when I thought, "It's time." And, as the old saying goes, like a woman possessed, I sought out each item and put them in a garbage bag. My chest was tight and my heart pounding.

I honestly had the urge to smash each on the concrete basement floor, but, I told myself with each one, "No, this is about healing, not anger."

I was calm by the time I finished.  I even felt lighter!  I felt like I could breathe again.

Despite the pouring rain, I took that garbage bag right to the dumpster and threw it in. Not one regret followed.  I went back into our home and found a couple of other items, placed them in a bag and took that bag out to the dumpster as well.

I have a few more items to go, but I am so happy to have finally done this much!

It is a very emotional process at the time one does it, this purging.  But even more worth it than what you go through in the process? Emotional freedom.  I can't describe the freedom and lightness I feel afterwards, but I can tell you it is more than worth it!

Have you purged something recently? Share with me how you felt afterwards in the comments below!

Love me a good purge! Just did the entire top floor of our house over winter break. I'm a major neat freak and everything needs to be organized and in its place, and though I love some good treasures i tend to purge my spaces a few times a year. My mum is so the opposite and is a busy busy lady who tends to stuff things in hiding places just so the clutter is off the table, needless to say the kitchen was a nightmare behind closed doors ;) 9 big trash bags later I feel so much better. Amazed that was hiding in our clutter-free kitchen.
:-)

I make sure to purge our home several times a year, especially with the change of seasons! It feels fantastic to simplify and/or get rid of negative/bad juju!

Amen!

Purging feels to me like letting go of things that are weighing you down - even when you're not conscious of being weighed down.

Glad you were able to do that :-)

(Though it didn't post at 12:01am like it was supposed to). Anyhoo, I'm home and resting (uncomfortably). Surgery went well, my kidney tube and stone are gone! I have an internal stent on the left hand side but I'm okay with that because it comes out in the doctor's office in 2-3 weeks (no back to the hospital) and especially because it meant they could take that nephrostomy tube out! (The last nearly 2 weeks of that 15 weeks was rough with that thing, my body was simultaneously trying to heal aroun...
