While I do love having more room again in our living room, (it's so cozy when the tree first goes up & until Christmas) I was a bit misty eyed as I vacuumed up the trail of pine needles that led out of our front door. But, as you can see in the pic, this Christmas's tree has a new purpose now, providing shelter for birds (and most likely a squirrel or two) throughout the rest of this Winter. (Just in time too with the temps not getting out of the teens this week). I sprinkled cracked corn around the base and all over the tree itself to get birds interested.

Opposite this end is where I throw out seed, stale bread & cookies, etc. and today I've had a neat little visitor: A Downy Woodpecker! He's been here before, just not often. He's tiny, about 5" (adult males get to be about 6"). The larger Hairy Woodpecker (10" or so) is around on the property by the creek side & doesn't come over back here as far as I can tell.

We may have had an inch of snow here and I'm being generous at that! Everything was coated with a thin layer of ice this morning as well. Hubby was morw disgruntled about the weather yesterday than I was! He was going to go hunting but when they predicted 8" for us, he decided not to go since he didn't want to come home from hunting and have to go strait to snowblowing & salting. Ah well.

Jo,
I love the little Christmas tree nook you have set up for the birds. That's great! We have a woodpecker behind our house too. And a family of owls. We hear them hooting at night.
Sadly, I still have our (artificial) Christmas tree up in our living room. It's a matter of getting all of the boxes out of the attic again. Hopefully, next weekend! :)

Aw, aren't you sweet. I was wistful putting away the Xmas stuff, too. Xmas '09 will be here before we know it :-)

Great idea Jo! Really...that's awesome for the birds and a very thoughtful thing to do. I'll gladly ship my snow your way......we've got about 5 inches now the news said this morning. Ugh.
Hannah, there's still a lot of Christmas up around the house! What's been pulled down is sitting on top of the boxes to be boxed & brought back to the basement! (Snowy & snow man items stay put until Spring!)

G, don't rush my 2009! I'm not ready for 2008 to be over already!

Holli, thanks and you can send your snow my way any time! (Just don't send it this way once we (hopefully) move out of state! It'll be my luck that THAT'S when it will snow here).

I think when you "give back" you've got to try & do it on all levels; like this with repurposing the Christmas tree & putting out seed, using reusable totes for groceries, recycling and repurposing everything you possibly can, cooking with fresh & less preserved ingriedients, walking instead of driving when possible, gardening without chemicals...
Giving away or donating items (like books) you no longer need or use, donating to food banks when you can...

2nd Annual Practical Magic Blog Party 2011 is Here! *Updated*

It's time for the 2nd Annual Practical Magic Blog Party created & hosted by the wonderful Anna of Frosted Petunias ! My sincerest apologies for getting this up rather late! The adventure that is post Hurricane Irene cleanup & repairs has been taking up too much time recently. (sigh) Things are a mess; I only started decorating for Autumn yesterday and I'm missing Halloween decorations! Luckily my broom is always safe and sound by the front door so at least I don't have to wonder where it is. (Not that it hasn't been known to scamper off now and again - naughty broom). I was afraid, quite honestly, that I wouldn't even get a post up sometime today! I kept hitting dead ends with every other one I tried. But, this morning I sat here at the computer and it flowed. Thankfully! I would have been so disappointed if I'd missed this, it was such fun last year! As some may remember from last years party, while I like the movie, (and love that house!), I love the...

The Time Is Upon Us Once Again!

Welcome Friends! It's time once again for A Fanciful Twist Halloween Party ! Warmest thanks to the lovely Vanessa for hosting again this year. My apologies for not having this up sooner, I've been dreadfully under the weather and my helpers have been more of a hindrance! My lovely kitchen witch Helvetica has given up time off and has been cooking & baking away since last night but the skeletons have been eating everything in sight (damn their bottomless stomachs!) though they won't fess up and the invisible man has been raving on and on every time the door bell rings! I do hope you'll enjoy your visit to Pumpkin Manor and have a Happy Halloween ! I look forward to your return. (Slideshow below - if it plays too fast, hover your cursor on it until the <- -> appear & click on them to view what you've missed). 11:14pm

11:14pm (3/16/09) Watching a documentary Tennessee is so beautiful Head & nose all stuffy Out of ZyrtekD - sigh Want to read but distracted by my clogged head Hubby's snoring a little, restless a lot I worry about him He's so tired, works so much Doesn't get to do what he enjoys often enough (If at all) He willingly took my burdens & made them his own I'm still not used to being taken care of Makes me uncomfortable, guilty I took care of things for so many years Are 2 persons "stuff" too much for 1 person? Even a good, strong man? I know what it is to do more than my "fair share" Though the situation was completely different Is the end result the same?
